Hylu is the recording name of Adam Ainley, a sound artist, composer and music producer of mixed heritage

(Ethiopian and English).

In 2019, he began releasing his solo music as Hylu in London - instrumental, bass-driven electronic music shaped by dub, reggae, dancehall, hip-hop and jungle. In July 2025 he relocated to Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, to establish roots and build a closer connection to his Ethiopian heritage.

 

The move has fed directly into Hylu's music. Space remains the defining feature, and sub frequencies continue to be built for sound system. Ethiopian pentatonic scales and regional rhythms are also starting to surface in his work.

 

Alongside production, Hylu is developing as a musician - practising keyboard and percussion, and learning various traditional Ethiopian instruments. A live hardware show is currently in development, and he is working toward an event series based in Addis Abeba.
